About Chowringhee Assembly (Vidha Sabha) Constituency – Bye Elections 2014
Chowringhee Assembly Constituency of West Bengal will have by-polls on September 13, 2014. The Vidhan Sabha seat was left vacant since the MLA from Chowringhee, Shikha Mitra of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) left and joined the Congress instead.
AITC's Nayna Bandyopadhyay, BJP's Ritesh Tiwari, Congress' Santosh Kr. Pathak, CPI (M)'s Faiyaz Ahmad Khan and five other independent candidates will contest for these 2014 by-polls from the Chowringhee Assembly Constituency. Ahead of these by-polls, an election rally was addressed by Amit Shah, BJP’s President, in Kolkata. The rally was a part of the BJP’s campaign agenda for increasing its presence in West Bengal. Also, both the Trinamool Congress and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have been stepping up their efforts so as to keep up with the BJP’s campaigning strategies.
Chowringhee was Congress’ bastion from 1982 to 2001 and from 2001 the assembly constituency has been AITC’s stronghold till date. The last Assembly Elections which were held in 2011 saw AITC’s Shikha Mitra emerge as the winner after defeating RJD’s Bimal Singh.
