Tamil Nadu Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Election 2016 Summary
The 2016 Tamil Nadu Assembly election was held in single phase on 16 May. Polling took place in 232 constituencies of the state legislative assembly on 16 May while it got postponed to 23 May in the constituencies of Thanjavur and Aravakurichi. This is something which has not happened in the state's political history since 1989. Jayalalitha now holds the record for being the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the maximum number of times. The AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) bagged 134 seats and main opposition DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) got 89 seats out of the total 234 seats. Jayalalitha contested from R.K. Nagar constituency and defeated her DMK rival by a margin of 39,545 votes.
About Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly
Tamil Nadu has a unicameral legislature comprising the Legislative Assembly and the Governor of the state. In 2010, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government tried to convert the legislature into a bicameral one, but it was unable to do so because it went out of power within a year.
Out of 235 seats, 234 are democratically elected while the remaining seat is reserved for a representative of the Anglo Indian community. Since independence, the state has witnessed 14 assembly elections with the first one being held in 1952.
The 14th legislative assembly was constituted on 16 May 2011.The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led front formed the government with the party enjoying a clear majority with 150 seats. It had allied with Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) which emerged as the single largest party with 29 votes. The DMK became the distant third with 23 seats.
The first assembly elections were held in 1952. Although no party secured a majority in the elections, C. Rajagopalachari of the Congress Party became the first and only non-elected Chief Minister of the state. The two successive assembly polls on 1957 and 1962 were won by the Congress party. The DMK came to power for the first time in 1967, and since then it had won the elections thrice. So far, AIADMK has won three assembly polls with the latest being the 2011 elections. The next election will take place in 2016.
While P. Dhanapal of AIADMK is the Speaker of the assembly, Vjayakanth of DMDK has been the Leader of the Opposition since 2011.
