General (13th Lok Sabha) Election Results India

The announcement of 1999 general elections or the 13th Lok Sabha came as no surprise as there was large-scale political instability. This time around, the National Democratic Alliance entered the political scenario with great zest and confidence. It was Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was headed the government. Besides, the INC was also doing well for itself and focused on various issues of the voters. There was also the backdrop of the Kargil War, where the country saw a united government.

Political background in 1999
In 1999 a coalition government existed. However, after the government failed within one year of power, due to the withdrawal of support by its allies, another general election was held, much to the annoyance of the voters. Sonia Gandhi led the opposition party of the INC, but even she was unable to earn the required majority. This led to fresh elections in 1999.

Winners 13th Lok Sabha Elections 1999
Clearly it was a win for the NDA, who won 298 seats while the Congress, along with its allies, managed to win 136 seats. The Left front coalition won 43 seats and other regional parties and independents together won 67 seats. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was again declared the Prime Minister of India. The 1999 elections also gave the country political stability till the next general elections.
