Reserved for the Scheduled Tribes, the assembly constituency of Jama has been occupied by JMM. Sita Soren won the assembly elections of 2009. He defeated Manoj Kumar Singh of BJP with a huge margin. Soren bagged 38550 votes as against Singh's 25844 votes. Located in Dumka district of Jharkhand, the assembly constituency belongs to Dumka parliamentary constituency. As per 2011, the city had a population of 137,963.
