The 3rd Assembly for Delhi Vidhan Sabha were held in 1977. This was a historic election as for the first time, the Congress wonvery few seats in the Delhi State Assembly. Unlike its massive victory in the 1972, when the Congress won 44 seats, in the 1977 elections it managed to bag only 10 seats.
Most number of seats in this election was won by the Janata Party (JNP). The total number of votes polled was 5,38,974. The 1977 elections witnessed a greater number of registered unrecognized political parties contesting for the elections, unlike what happened in 1972. The other types of political parties contesting in the elections were either national or regional political parties as well as independent candidates. 56 MLAs or Members of Legislative Assembly were elected from 56 assembly constituencies in total.
During 1977 elections,
Delhi was under President's rule as the state had ceased to exist. Therefore, there was no Chief Minister of Delhi and it was ruled as a Union Territory by the Central Government.
