In
2009 Election Results the UPA won around 261 out of 543 seats, and in the second position was NDA with 158 seats, while 23 seats were won by Left parties.
In
2014 Election Results the BJP won 282 seats out of 543 seats. This took the NDA tally to 336 seats out of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. INC could only manage to win 44 seats and stayed in the second position while AIADMK party from Tamil Nadu came third with 37 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.
In 2019, the BJP is set to return to power at the Centre after a sweeping win in the
2019 Lok Sabha election , armed with a bigger mandate than in the 2014 General Election. The party - led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah duo has secured 303 seats in the 17th Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, the Congress, the main Opposition party, managed to increase its vote share from 2014 only by a handful of votes, with a final tally of 52 seats. There will be no Leader of Opposition in the upcoming Lower House for a second consecutive term.
The total number of electorates in the Chandigarh Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 1) according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports are 524,444 of which 291,666 are males and 232,778 are females.
Situated in the northern Indian city of Chandigarh, which is the capital of both the states of Haryana and Punjab, this Vidhan Sabha parliamentary constituency is significant as it has been an important seat of the Congress which won this parliamentary constituency for a majority of the terms.
With a population of 10,55,450 people, according to the 2011 Census of India, Chandigarh is the first planned city in independent India and has extremely high population density of 7,900 persons per square kilometer. Whereas, males constitute 55% of the population, females comprise 45% of the massive population. The total number of voters in the last Lok Sabha elections held in 2009 was 5,25,437.
Often termed the "Pensioner's Paradise", as a large bulk of the population in this constituency have been or are into government service, the economy of Chandigarh thrives on the government wings which have their bases in this Union Territory. The other industries visible in the Chandigarh constituency and supplying the backbone of the economy are paper manufacturing, alloys, metals, sanitary products, automobile parts and pharmaceuticals, to name a few.
Chandigarh Election History
The first general election to be conducted in the parliamentary constituency of Chandigarh was in 1967 after its formation in 1962. Since then, 11 more MPs have been elected from this constituency. The detailed election history is as follows.
- The Bharatiya Jan Sangh (BJS) won the seat in 1967.
- In 1971, the Indian National Congress (INC) won the general (Lok Sabha) election.
- In the general election of 1977, the Bharatiya Lok Dal (BLD) won the only seat.
- The 1980 general election was won by the Indian National Congress (I) (INC) (I).
- In 1984, the INC was once again victorious.
- The 1989 election went to the Janata Dal.
- In 1991, the INC once again won the seat.
- The 1996 general election was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
- The 1998 Lok Sabha election was won by the BJP again.
- In 1999, the INC won the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency.
- The INC won in 2004 as well.
- The election of 2009 went to the INC for a third consecutive time.
