Remaining a stronghold of the Communist Party of India during the last two decades of the 20th century, Jahanabad is one of the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies of Bihar. The Jahanabad Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 36) consists of 1,276,912 number of electorates in totality, of these 680,766 are males and 596,146 are females as the Election commission of India 2009 data suggests. This constituency covers portions of the Arwal and Jehanabad districts.
Both these districts have recently created headlines in the country, owing to the Naxalite insurgency which has wreaked havoc in this region. Because these districts are infested with the Red Labels, these are part of the Red Corridor. All major economic growth and infrastructural facilities in this region have been hampered due to frequent attacks of the Naxals. This makes both the districts economically deprived. The Jahanabad Lok Sabha constituency comprises six legislative assembly segments, which are scattered across these two districts. Out of these six Vidhan Sabha segments, Makhdumpur is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates.
