Arunachal Pradesh Lok Sabha Election Summary 2014

Arunachal Pradesh has only constituencies which were won by Indian National Congress (INC) and Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) each. Arunachal Pradesh was initially a Union Territory since 1975 and was made a complete state in 1987. Arunachal has 60 assembly and two parliamentary seats. The politics in Arunachal has the national parties as major participants in the elections. Political parties like Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), nationalist Congress Party (NCP) etc. are few of the active parties in Arunachal. Presently, Pema Khandu from INC is the Chief Minister of the state. Arunachal which contributes only two seats in the Lok Sabha has been an important state for the political parties. BJP with its mission 272+ focused on Arunachal as even two seats matter to achieve its mission. Congress also hoped for winning the in the state again. The elections for the two states took place on a single phase.

Arunachal Pradesh Elections History

Arunachal Pradesh is one of the most prominent states in India. The state has its own government which runs
the state and is selected by the , set by the constitution of India. A government is needed to run Arunachal Pradesh, election process to maintain order in the state and run the health, education and other systems of the state the right way too. For this the election process is required to choose the government lawfully by the votes of citizens of Arunachal Pradesh. There are 60 constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh, and the election was organized for 57 of them in 2009. CM Dorjee Kahndu, MLA Tsewang Dhondup of Tawang and Jambey Tashi of Lumla were pre declared as elected candidates.

In the election of Arunachal Pradesh in 2009 Congress had candidates in all the seats; NCP had 30 candidates and Trinamool Congress had 28 candidates. Congress was the only party with candidates for all the constituencies, and they ended up winning the election.

Arunachal Pradesh was made a Union Territory in 1975 with a separate legislative assembly. However, it was converted into a full fledged state in 1987 with a state legislative assembly of 60 members. Since the formation, the state has seen four general assemblies. Mr. Dorjee Khandu leads the present government as the chief minister of the state.

Arunachal Pradesh is largely home to tribal population who believe in a peaceful existence. Though people are politically aware of the state, they support healthy existence of politics.

Administrative structure

The governor who is appointed by the president of India is the head of the state of Arunachal Pradesh and is helped by an elected chief minister, a Council of Ministers, and a unicameral Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha). At the local level, the state consists more than one dozen districts. The smallest administrative units are the villages. The state does not have its own high court. It falls under the jurisdiction of the high court in Guwahati, Assam.

Arunachal Pradesh Major Political Parties

There are many political parties active in Arunachal Pradesh. The major ones are the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).


Indian National Congress: The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee is the state unit of the Indian National Congress. Mukut Mithi is the President of the APCC, and also a member of the Rajya Sabha. Some of the other frontal heads of the party in Arunachal Pradesh are Yari Dulom, Taki Taba, Tadar Niglar, Padi Richo,  Jalley Sonam, and Kirbe Dulom. There are many frontal organisations of the party in the state, such as the Arunachal Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee, the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Seva Dal, the Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress, the INTUC (Arunachal Pradesh Unit), the NSUI State Unit (Arunachal Pradesh), the Arunachal Pradesh Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan, and the All India Rajeev Gandhi Vichar Manch International Arunachal Pradesh State Unit.

Bharatiya Janata Party: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Arunachal Pradesh is going great guns as some of the top state leaders of the Indian National Congress are joining the BJP. For instance, the former Chief Minister of the state, Geogang Apang, has resigned from the Congress and joined the BJP.

Arunachal Pradesh became a Union Territory in 1975 through the enactment of 37th Constitutional Amendment Act 1975, headed by a Lt. Governor. During 1975-1978, a 23-member provisional Legislative Assembly was formed. On 4 March 1978, a 33-member elected Legislative Assembly was constituted. On 20 February 1987, Arunachal Pradesh became a full state. The strength of State Legislative Assembly is currently 60.

State Legislative Assembly in Arunachal Pradesh

The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly or the Vidhan Sabha of Arunachal Pradesh is made of the 60 elected members from the constituencies by the election. The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly is the body that helps the order of the state to run within the laws and regulations of the Indian constitution. They assist the government of India to run the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

This is the center of politics and governance in Arunachal Pradesh, and they are responsible for every state government action taken in the state. Sri Dorjee Khandu is the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, and all the departments of the government run under him. This governing body plans and executes the development of Arunachal Pradesh, and has a separate identity from the government of India. Politics in the state

Though Arunachal Pradesh is a politically active state, there is no major state level political party. In the absence of any state level political party, national political parties dominate the state's political scene. The Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party are the main two parties of the state, with other parties like Trinamool Congress and other small parties, which are not big national level parties, also active in the state. The largest party is The Indian National Congress (INC) which holds 34 seats in the state assembly and the second most important party is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh is elected through a general election, and the candidate with the maximum vote becomes the head of the state. The Arunachal Pradesh, like the government itself, is elected for 5 years. However, the reelection condition also exists in Arunachal Pradesh.

The chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh can nominate his or her own name for the election of next term, after the end of 5 years.
