About Punjab Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha)
The Punjab legislative assembly came into being after the first elections in independent India in 1952. The state had a bicameral legislature before the Upper House was abolished in 1970. It now comprises the legislative assembly (Vidhan Sabha) only. The structure and composition of the Punjab Legislative Assembly has been changing from time to time. The membership was reduced from 154 to 87 upon the state's reorganization in 1966. It rose again to 104 after the general elections of 1967. It now comprises 117 members directly elected from 117 single-member assembly constituencies of the state. After the Partition, the Punjab legislative assembly was convened at various different temporary locations due to lack of a permanent building. From 6 March 1961, the Vidhan Bhawan in Chandigarh became the permanent venue for the assembly.
A normal tenure of the assembly is five years. The chief minister of the state is the leader of the assembly. The house proceedings are monitored by the Speaker. Know the current members of Punjab Legislative Assembly ...
