Mizoram Lok Sabha Election Summary 2014

The Indian National Congress (INC) won the lone seat of Mizoram state for the Lok Sabha polls 2014. It was declared a state in 1987 and at that time it was represented by only one constituency.Presently, the Indian National Congress is in power in the state and Lal Thanhawla is the Chief Minister of the state. The political parties formed raised issues during the poll campaigns in the state. BJP raised issues of illegal Bangladeshi migrants in the state. INC focused on local issues. The opinion polls suggested that the INC was expected to continue its stronghold in the state.

North Eastern hilly state of Mizoram is one of the smallest and newest states in India. It shares an international boundary with Bangladesh and Burma. Mizoram was earlier part of Assam and was established as an independent state in 1987. It was 23rd state of India. The major political parties of Mizoram are the Indian National Congress, the Mizo National Front, and many others such as the Maraland Democratic Front, the Zoram Nationalist Party, and the Mizoram People's Conference.

About Mizoram Elections

The north eastern hilly state of Mizoram shares an international boundary with Bangladesh and Burma, and is one of the smallest and newest states in the country. Originally part of Assam, Mizoram became a Union Territory in 1972 following the North East Reorganization act of 1972. Elections were held to the Union Territory seats in the parliament and the first representative was Pu Sangliana of the Mizo Union Party.

In 1961, the Mizo National Front was constituted under Mr Laldenga. The party was outlawed in 1967 owing to its secessionist agenda. However, the Indian Government signed a memorandum with the Mizo National Front in 1986 and the state of Mizoram came into existence on 20th February 1987. It became the 23rd state of India. The first State Assembly was constituted in 1987 with 40 elected members.

Mizoram has a unicameral state legislature with only one house in the state legislative assembly. The Legislative assembly or the Vidhan Sabha conducts the different sessions of the house at Aizawl, the capital of the state. The total number of state assembly constituencies is 40. The 40 members of the state legislative assembly are elected every five years.

The state also conducts elections to the three autonomous district councils for ethnic tribal areas to ensure local governance at grassroots for these regions within the state of Mizoram. These three councils are the Chakma Autonomous District council, Lai Autonomous District council, and Mara Autonomous District council.


The states are allocated seats in the Indian parliament on the basis of the population of the state. The ratio of the number of seats in the parliament and the population of the state is the same for all states in the country. As the population of Mizoram is one of the lowest in the country, the state is represented by one member in the Lok Sabha and one in the Rajya Sabha. The current Rajya Sabha MP is Shri Ronald Sapa Tlau. The sitting Lok Sabha MP is Shri C L Ruala of the INC. Congress won the Mizoram assembly elections of 2013 by a huge margin. The INC has won absolute majority by acquiring 34 of the 40 seats in the elections, defeating Mizo National Front, Mizoram People’s Conference, as well the ZNP. The rival party, Mizo National Front, bagged 5 seats: Tuikum, Saiha, Aizawl West-I, Aizawl West-II, Aizawl West-III, as compared with three seats in 2008 assembly elections.

The chief minister of Mizoram, Pu Lalthanhawla was ready to serve the state for the second time. He won from two seats - Serchhip and Hrangturzo. The next Assembly polls are tentatively scheduled around December 2018.

The state has 40 assembly constituencies out of which 39 are reserved for Scheduled tribes. State Legislative Assembly

The last assembly elections were held in December 2008. The number of eligible voters was 6,11,124 lakh.

The Indian National Congress (INC) won 34 out of 40 Vidhan Sabha seats. The Mizo National Front won 5 seats, and others won 1. The INC had a clear majority and formed the government.

The current Chief Minister and the Leader of the House is Pu Lalthanhawla. He has been the CM since 11th December 2008. The speaker of the state legislative assembly is Shri Hiphei. The Deputy Speaker is Shri R. Lalrinawma. The Governor of the state is Kummanam Rajashekaran.

State Assembly Election History

The state had witnessed President's rule being imposed twice; the first time was in 1977 and the second time was from September 1988 to January 1989.
