Elections were held to the Union Territory seats in the parliament and the first representative was Pu Sangliana of the Mizo Union Party. In 1961, the Mizo National Front was constituted under Mr Laldenga. The party was outlawed in 1967 owing to its secessionist agenda. However, the Indian Government signed a memorandum with the Mizo National Front in 1986 and the state of Mizoram came into existence on 20th February 1987. It became the 23rd state of India. The first State Assembly was constituted in 1987 with 40 elected members.

The states are allocated seats in the Indian parliament on the basis of the population of the state. The current Rajya Sabha MP is Shri Ronald Sapa Tlau. The sitting Lok Sabha MP is Shri C L Ruala of the INC.
