About Maharashtra Elections
One of the most famous states of India, Maharashtra is situated in the western parts of India. It is spread over an area of 307,713 sq km, making it the third largest state. Its expansive western coastline comprises the Arabian Sea, while it is bordered to the north by Maharashtra, to the east by Chhattisgarh and to the south by Karnataka. With a population of over 115 million, Maharashtra is the second-most populous state of the country. The capital of Maharashtra is Mumbai, which is considered the industrial capital of India. This metropolitan city, along with its rich political economy, makes Maharashtra the wealthiest state of India, contributing to over 13% of the country’s GDP.
Maharashtra has a rich political tradition. In the 17th century, this was the land of the fearless Marathas, who were considered the chief enemy of the Mughals. Under the undaunted spirit of Shivaji, a true Maratha warrior, a number of wars and political struggles, both against the Mughals, and later the British, took place. The Maratha Empire expanded not only in all of Maharashtra, but in northern India too, especially after the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761, which seriously questioned the Mughal existence in the country. However, the Third Anglo Maratha War, which ended in 1818, led to massive victory of the British and the decline of the Maratha Empire under the Maratha warriors. The British ruled the present region of Maharashtra, along with Gujarat, as a united whole under the name of Bombay Presidency. After the independence of India, many stalwarts, including the radical Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar, demanded that the region be divided according to linguistic divisions. Therefore, according to the States Reorganization Act of 1956, the present Maharashtra, which was created on May 1, 1960 was carved out of the united region. Maharashtra was therefore a land of the Marathi-speaking people. This day is called Maharashtra Day. Yashwantrao Chavan of the Congress party became the first Chief Minister of present-day Maharashtra.
Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Election Summary 2014
Low Voter Turnout Increases the prospects of Hung Verdict in Maharashtra
As opposed to the northern state of Haryana where more than 70 percent voter turnout was recorded, polling ended peacefully in Maharashtra on October 15 evening, with around 64 percent of the state's 8.35 crore voters exercising their franchise for the 288 assembly seats. As many as 4,119 candidates are in the fray for these seats, these include 276 women.
The electorate also voted for the lone Lok Sabha by-elections for Beed parliamentary seat which was left vacant due to the untimely death of senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde.
The assembly election in Maharashtra this time has pitted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), against virtually every party – Shiv Sena, the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The BJP’s campaign was spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. So, the poll becomes a test case for the effectiveness of Modi factor in the current Indian politics.
Also, it is a matter of prestige for the Shiv Sena, which is headed by a very bitter Uddhav Thackeray who fiercely criticised the BJP for breaking their 25-year-old alliance. The stakes are equally high for the Congress, as it can ill-afford to lose this politically crucial state. Sharad Pawar’s NCP too would like to score an impressive tally so that it remains in the reckoning for the government formation in the state.

About Maharashtra Assembly (Vidhan Sabha)
Maharashtra, like any other state in India, has specific geographic regions which are represented in its Legislative Assembly. These specific regions are called Assembly constituencies. When the present state of Maharashtra came into existence in May 1960, Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha had 264 Assembly constituencies. Out of these 264 constituencies, 217 were for general candidates, 33 constituencies were reserved for candidates who belonged to the Scheduled Castes and 14 were reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates. The number of assembly constituencies in the state was increased from 264 to 270 in the year 1967, when the third term of the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha was elected. The present number of constituencies in Maharashtra is 288, out of which 235 assembly seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the General category, 28 are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 25 were reserved for the Scheduled Tribes. Each of these constituencies is represented by a Member of the Legislative Assembly, who voices the concerns of that particular constituency in the Vidhan Sabha. Members from each of these Assembly constituencies are elected directly by the voters in the Assembly elections, according to the Universal Adult Franchise. The elections are held after a period of every 5 years, if the Vidhan Sabha is not dissolved sooner. The supervision and responsibility of the elections to these assembly constituencies is carried out by a centralized, Independent statutory body called the Election Commission.

Election Issues of Maharashtra
One of the major issues in the upcoming elections in Maharashtra is the high level of inflation. Among all the crises being faced by the people in Maharashtra, this is the most crucial one. However, there are other problems such as corruption and inconsistencies at various levels of governance. Secularism and communalism have come up as important issues in the recent years as well. The worst of all this is that the people are being affected by these problems on a daily basis. The issue of inflation, however, is the most critical one according to the common people in this state.
This issue is more important for the women who have to perform the onerous task of controlling the expenses. It is also being stated that corruption is another major issue that could have a decisive impact on the results of the upcoming elections. Financial irregularity has been a major problem in Maharashtra – especially evident in the rural areas - and ever since Prithviraj Chavan took over, he has been able to make much headway in this regard. However, one feels that this could very well be a major issue in the upcoming assembly elections. The inter-party dynamics of the reigning Congress and NCP, a major ally, could also dictate the outcome of each vote.
