Andhra Pradesh Lok Sabha Election 2014 Summary
The results declared for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were not surprising as Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) have won the majority of the seats in Andhra. TDP has won 16 seats while TRS has won 11 seats. Indian Natioanl Congress INC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to bag only two seats and three seats respectively. The first general elections were held in 1956 in the state and it has participated in another set of general elections in 2014. The Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) were generally the ruling parties in the state. Congress has ruled the state maximum times since the beginning of elections in Andhra. At present, there is President's rule in the state after the resignation by its Chief Minister, Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy, due to the division of Andhra and formation of the separate Telangana state. Andhra's politics was ruled by YSR Congress and TDP and opinion polls also predicted their victory in the 2014 elections. BJP who has lost its charm in AP, also tried to improve their position in the state during their campaigns. The 16th Vidhan Sabha election for the state of Andhra Pradesh will take place in April-May 2014. The current term of the Assembly is going to end on 2 June 2014. Andhra Pradesh has a total of 294 seats in the Vidhan Sabha. In 2009, 158 seats were won by the INC (Indian National Congress), although this time, the state's politics is especially turbulent, given the formation of Telangana.
Andhra Pradesh is located in South of India and is a Telugu speaking state in the country. The first general elections were held in the state in 1956 for around 249 constituencies, that represented around 26 districts of Andhra Pradesh. About Andhra Pradesh Elections
The Indian National Congress party won most of the state elections from 1953 to 1983. There were 10 chief ministers from the year 1956 to 1983. In 1983, however, there was a lot of change in the political scenario. N.T. Rama Rao, established a new party called the Telugu Desam party and within nine months of its formation, the party was voted to power and NTR became the chief minister and was the first from the non-congress party. But the party broke into two parties as the then state finance minster Nadendla Bhaskara Rao chose to separate and form the state government with the support of Congress. Later on again NTR came into power in 1984. In 1989 the congress came back to power with Marri Chenna Reddy as the chief minister and was in power till 1994.NTR appointed his son-in-law as the revenue minister in 1994, when he was the chief minister. But due to the influence of the wife of NTR, his son-in-law Chandrababu Naidu became the chief minister and the party now came to be called as TDP (NTR). In the year 1996 NTR died and his wife succeeded after him. Chandrababu Naidu became the next chief minister for 9 years till 2004. After that the Indian National Congress again came into power and made Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy the chief minister.
Changes were taking place fast and a separate Telangana state was demanded by the people in that region. In 2009, the central government announced the process of the new state, but controversy arose as the city of Hyderabad was also one of the ten districts of Telangana region. Today the decision is on a hold till the parties come to a unanimous decision.
Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy became the chief minister again by defeating Praja Rajyam Party and alliances. However, he died in a helicopter crash in 2009, following which Konigeti Rosaian became the chief minister in 2009. But he soon resigned and Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy was sworn in as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. But now due to the protest because of the formation of Telangana Kiran Kumar Reddy has resigneda and President's rule has applied in the state till the next Government is formed in the state.
Administrative structure
The state of Andhra Pradesh is comprises of a Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly, lower house) which has 294 seats and a Vidhan Parishad (legislative council, upper house) which has 90 members. Out of these, 31 members are elected from local bodies, 31 members are selected from the assembly, eight members are chosen from the teachers, eight members are selected from graduates, and 12 members are nominated by the Governor. 42 members represent the state of Andhra Pradesh in the Parliament to the Lok Sabha, the Lower House and 18 in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House.Issues of the state
Bifurcation: The decision to divide Andhra Pradesh into Seemandhra and Telangana has raised many issues for the people of the state. The bifurcation has many economic implications.a) Income: It is believed that the bifurcation of the state will be damaging to the other regions as most of the income of the state of Andhra Pradesh comes from Hyderabad and the execution of welfare programmes would not be possible in other regions if the state is divided.
b) Employment & Education: The youth of the state feels that after the division, educated people of the backward regions like those in Rayalaseema will be denied employment opportunities.
Resources: Sharing of water and energy resources will be a major problem. Bifurcation of the state will also lead to water problems in Andhra & Rayalaseema as Telangana is on the upstream of Krishna & Godavari rivers
